GERD Output Surpasses Design Estimates By 17% In First Year, Consortium Urges Focus On Domestic Access

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) generated approximately 17 percent more electricity than its initial long-term annual estimates during its first year of operation, according to a statement released by the GERD International Collaborative Consortium (GICC). Marking the landmark facility’s first anniversary, the consortium called for accelerated grid investments to ensure the dam’s power directly reaches local households and industries.
Citing Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) data, GICC reported that Ethiopia generated 35,671 GWh of electricity during the 2025/26 fiscal period, with GERD accounting for 51.5 percent of total national output. The consortium attributed the higher-than-expected output to favorable hydrological conditions and efficient resource management.
