Geopolitics in a tea cup: the socio-political flavour of TanTea
TanTea, a government-run tea initiative in Tamil Nadu, serves as both a commercial enterprise and a social welfare project for Sri Lankan Tamil repatriates. Established in 1968, the brand maintains a unique socio-political history tied to the livelihoods of displaced populations.
Why it matters
It illustrates how state-run enterprises can be used as tools for social justice and economic rehabilitation for marginalized groups.
A sprinkle of TanTea retail tea shops operate across Tamil Nadu, largely run by dealerships attached to Tamilnadu Tea Plantation Cooperation Limited, shortened to TanTea. In Chennai, habitués of Mylapore have likely noticed a TanTea shop abutting the Kapaleeswarar temple tank on RK Mutt Road. If they have not, they cannot be a habitué of that part of town, as this outlet pitched tent there nearly 11 years ago.
