The Greater Chennai Corporation has relocated 17 homeless families from the streets to a new shelter on Marina Beach. The initiative provides these families with temporary housing, meals, and sanitation facilities as part of a rehabilitation effort.
Why it matters
This reflects municipal efforts to address urban homelessness and improve living conditions for vulnerable populations in major cities.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has relocated 17 families living on the streets in Chepauk and Peters Road to temporary accommodation at a family shelter on Marina Beach, as part of its rehabilitation measures.
The families were relocated on October 9 by the Community Development Department of the GCC. Transport was arranged to move the families and their belongings safely to the shelter, according to a press release.
The shelter, built to accommodate families on Marina Beach, has been completed and is now being used to provide temporary accommodation to those relocated from the two areas.
The GCC has also made arrangements to provide the families with three meals a day, drinking water and sanitation facilities, taking into account their basic needs.
