From molecular biology to precision oncology, Rukayat Olayemi Oni is rethinking how cancer is detected

Molecular biologist Rukayat Olayemi Oni is developing ONCODIAX, a diagnostic framework designed to better interpret complex molecular data in cancer detection. Her work aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical application to improve patient outcomes.
Why it matters
Advancements in precision oncology and data interpretation are critical for earlier and more accurate cancer diagnosis.
Cancer can begin changing at the molecular level long before its presence becomes obvious through conventional clinical signs. For Rukayat Olayemi Oni, that reality has shaped a career around one central question: how can molecular biology help healthcare systems detect, understand, and monitor cancer more precisely?
Oni is a molecular biology and clinical laboratory professional whose work spans cancer research, molecular diagnostics, biomarker analysis, genetics, and laboratory science. Her journey has taken her from studying Cell Biology and Genetics in Lagos to graduate research in the United States and into molecular diagnostics for colorectal cancer.
Along that journey, she began thinking beyond individual laboratory tests toward a broader problem: cancer diagnostics generates increasingly complex molecular information, but extracting useful intelligence from that information remains a challenge.
