From chasing DJs to becoming one: The Last

Racheal Hezo Kanyonyozi, known as The Last Girl, transitioned from a career in public relations to becoming a professional DJ in Kampala. After seeking formal training in Dubai, she is now preparing for her first major headlining show.
Why it matters
The story illustrates the professionalization of the DJ industry in East Africa and the career trajectory of emerging female talent in a male-dominated field.
For Racheal Hezo Kanyonyozi, better known as The Last Girl, the journey to becoming a DJ began on the other side of the booth - chasing DJs for work.
Before entering the DJing industry in 2022, Kanyonyozi worked in public relations and marketing for several bars around Kampala. Her job often involved booking and following up DJs hired to perform at the venues.
But after repeatedly chasing DJs who had already been paid, she decided she could do the job herself.
"I once told one of them, 'You keep tossing me around, but one day I will join you guys. That will be the end of me chasing you, yet I gave you money,'" she recalls.
That thought soon became reality. When she told her female friends about her plans to become a DJ, one of them jokingly suggested the name The Last Girl.
