Fresh meniscus transplantation programme launched
Rathi Med Speciality Hospital in Chennai has launched a fresh meniscus allograft transplantation programme. The initiative uses healthy tissue from knee replacement patients to treat others with irreparable meniscus damage.

Rathi Med Speciality Hospital, Chennai, launched a fresh meniscus allograft transplantation (MAT) programme as part of the Chennai Knee Course 2026 on Sunday (October 4).
The programme was inaugurated by IIT-Madras Director V. Kamakoti and Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Darez Ahamed, IAS.
The programme involves using a healthy meniscus from selected patients undergoing total knee replacement as a fresh graft for patients whose damaged meniscus cannot be repaired or reconstructed.
The hospital said it had received a licence from the Tamil Nadu government to perform fresh meniscus transplantation of the knee ), valid until December 2030.
The programme is led by N. Ragunanthan, Director, Head of Orthopaedics, and Consultant Surgeon of the hospital.
