Fred Richard Wins World Title On Floor, First For U.S. Men In 23 Years

American gymnast Fred Richard won the gold medal in the men's floor exercise at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Rotterdam. This victory marks the first world title for a U.S. man in the event in 23 years.
Why it matters
This win represents a significant milestone for U.S. men's gymnastics, highlighting the athlete's performance under high-pressure international competition.
"There will be a gold medal from Worlds around my neck," U.S. gymnast Fred Richard wrote on social media last spring. Some dismissed it as arrogance. After all, the Olympic medalist didn't make the 2025 world team just months earlier.
Call it what you want – Fred Richard said what he said, and delivered. The American gymnast won gold in the men's floor exercise final on Oct. 24 in Rotterdam, becoming only the ninth American man to win a world championship gold medal in gymnastics.
Defending world champion Jake Jarman (Great Britain) won silver, and Israel's Artem Dolgopyat claimed bronze. After finishing off the podium in the men's team final (sixth) and a disappointing 12th place in the all-around final, it seemed that Richard's goal would be postponed.
