Four arrested over theft of 12,000 doses of HIV drugs

Four individuals, including a midwife and a former security guard, have been arrested for the theft of 12,000 doses of government-owned antiretroviral drugs. The National Drug Authority conducted the operation following a tip-off regarding the illegal sale of public medical supplies.
Why it matters
The theft of essential medication threatens public health infrastructure and the availability of life-saving treatments for vulnerable populations.
An intelligence-led operation by the National Drug Authority (NDA) has led to the arrest of a midwife at Luweero General Hospital, her two brothers and a former hospital security guard over the alleged theft and possession of more than 12,000 doses of antiretrovirals (ARVs) and other government drugs worth Shs50 million.
The operation, which started with a tip-off, was conducted by officers from the NDA enforcement department between Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
The suspects are Irene Marion Namugenyi, a midwife; her two brothers; and Kule Bagambe Titus, a former security officer at Luweero General Hospital who is currently attached to Kyalugondo Health Centre III.
The four were on Thursday presented to the media by NDA officials. Ms Namugenyi vehemently denied the allegations, saying she had been framed.
