A 31-year-old woman, who was the niece of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was found dead at her residence in West Bengal ’s Birbhum on Tuesday (September 1, 2026).

Police said that she was the daughter of one of Ms. Banerjee’s maternal cousins who was also a local Trinamool Congress leader in Birbhum’s Kusumba village under Rampurhat Police Station. On March 2023, she was also among 842 candidates of 2016 West School Service Commission panel whose jobs were scrapped as per a direction by the Calcutta High Court .

According to the police, the incident took place at noon when her body was discovered by family members on the second floor of her house. However, no note has yet been found from her belongings.
