Former MLA visits waste management plant at Vidyaranyapuram following complaints of stench
Former MLA M.K. Somashekar inspected a waste management plant in Vidyaranyapuram following public complaints about a foul stench. Officials have been urged to investigate potential failures in waste processing methods.
Why it matters
Urban waste management is a critical public health issue, and failure to process waste scientifically can lead to significant environmental and quality-of-life degradation.
Former MLA M K Somashekar visited the Waste Management Plant at Vidyaranyapuram in the City on Saturday following complaints of stench emanating from the facility.
Mr. Somashekar said the residents of Vidyaranyapuram and surrounding localities like Kanakagiri, Chamundipuram, J.P. Nagar, Nachanahallipalya, Kuvempunagar and Ashokapuram had been complaining about an unbearable stench from the facility over the past one week.
Mr. Somashekar said he visited the facility and sought details from the officials about the problem after residents made repeated telephone calls to complain about the problem.
The officials were asked for the reason for the emergence of such a foul smell suddenly when no such problem had been reported over the past three years.
Expressing strong displeasure over the functioning of the officials, Mr. Somashekar said they had been entrusted with the responsibility of scientifically managing waste and protecting the environment.
