Former Minister demands resumption of Perundurai–Chennimalai road works

Former Minister Thoppu Venkatachalam alias N.D. Venkatachalam has urged the district administration to take immediate steps to resume the widening of the Perundurai–Chennimalai road, citing safety concerns following the suspension of the works.

In a representation to the Collector during the weekly grievances redress meeting here on Monday, Mr. Venkatachalam said the ₹65.50-crore project to widen the two-lane stretch from the Perundurai Old Bus Stand to Chennimalai into a four-lane road was taken up on February 20, 2026, under the Integrated Roads Development Scheme for 2026–27. The stretch forms part of the Erode–Perundurai–Kangeyam State Highway. Trenches had been dug on either side of the road and bridge works had commenced at several locations. However, the works had remained suspended for more than a month, causing hardship to motorists and the public, he said.
