Focus on reviving Karez system for groundwater recharge in Bidar
Officials and local activists in Bidar are discussing the conservation of the historic Karez water system to improve groundwater recharge. The meeting focused on protecting the ancient underground channels from urban encroachment and development damage.
Why it matters
Preserving traditional water infrastructure is critical for sustainable urban water management and climate resilience in historically significant regions.
The development and conservation of Bidar’s historic Karez water system, particularly the Naubad-Aliabad Karez, were discussed at a meeting with the Bidar Yuva team and Bidar Urban Development Authority (BUDA) Chairman Vinod V. Appe and BUDA Commissioner H.P. Pramod.
During the meeting on Tuesday, co-founder of Team Yuva Vinay Kumar Malage focused on the need to protect the historic water channels, the Karez system, and explore their potential to improve groundwater recharge and address the city’s growing water needs.
Mr. Malage explained the importance of preserving the Karez system, which dates back to the Bahmani period, and protecting its underground channels and catchment areas.
The impact of urban growth, encroachments and changes in land use on the Karez structure was also highlighted.
The meeting explored possible measures to improve rainwater infiltration, support groundwater recharge and protect the surrounding environment.
