Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday warned that frontier artificial intelligence (AI) laboratories are “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence”, raising significant concerns over AI safety and systemic risks.

Addressing the valedictory session of the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai, Ms. Sitharaman called on the fintech industry to build systems that are “fast yet accountable, autonomous yet reversible, and innovative without diluting consumer trust”.

“AI may assist judgement, but responsibility must remain human and institutional,” she said, stressing that greater consequences from AI-driven decisions should be accompanied by stronger safeguards.

“The more serious the consequence of a decision, the stronger the requirement for review, explanation and appeal,” Sitharaman said. She urged regulators, boards and senior management to take direct responsibility for understanding how AI is deployed within their organisations.
