Flores Aftershocks Subside, BMKG Unveils Field Survey to Guide Recovery

Jakarta, IO – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that aftershocks following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Flores on Aug 15, have entered a significant decay phase. Officials urged the public to remain calm yet vigilant as official information continues to guide the regional rehabilitation and reconstruction process.
Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan , BMKG Acting Geophysics Deputy , stated in a press conference on Tuesday (15/9/2026) that 15,722 aftershocks ranging from M0.9 to M6.2 were recorded in the 30 days following the main shock. Residents felt roughly 190 of these tremors. Latest monitoring data shows that both daily and weekly aftershock frequencies are trending downward, dropping steadily from 5,011 events in the first week to 864 in the fifth week.
