Floodwaters breach new areas in Kottayam and Pathanamthitta
Floodwaters have spread to new areas in Kerala's Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts, forcing thousands into relief camps. While water levels in major rivers remain steady, low-lying regions continue to face inundation and evacuation challenges.

Even as the rainfall eased slightly on Tuesday, large parts of Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts remained inundated, with floodwaters spreading to more areas of Upper Kuttanad and thousands continuing to stay in relief camps.
The water level in the Meenachil, Manimala, Pampa and Achenkovil rivers remained largely steady through the day and below the danger mark. However, floodwaters advanced into more low-lying areas resulting in fresh evacuations. As of Tuesday evening, Kottayam had 141 relief camps housing 6,848 people, while Pathanamthitta had 146 camps sheltering 7,168 people.
In Kottayam, floodwaters entered more parts of the backwater villages east of the town, even as normalcy gradually returned to the upper reaches, including Pala and Erattupetta. Houses in Eranjal, Illikkal, Veloor, Ayamanom and Kumarakom were inundated, with residents saying floodwaters reached areas that had remained unaffected even during the devastating 2018 floods.
