Flavio Bolsonaro flees to US after election defeat, vows to challenge Lula's victory
Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has traveled to the United States following his defeat in the presidential election and a legal order to surrender his passports. He intends to challenge the election results and organize opposition against the incoming administration of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Why it matters
The situation highlights ongoing political instability in Brazil and the potential for continued polarization as the Bolsonaro family faces legal scrutiny and political setbacks.
Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who lost Sunday's presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, left the country for the United States, an ally told news agency Reuters on Tuesday, confirming an earlier media report. His reported departure came after Brazil's Supreme Court ordered him to surrender his passports within 24 hours as part of a money-laundering investigation, in which he denies wrongdoing. Brazilian authorities cancelled his passports on Tuesday after he missed the deadline. The reported move has drawn comparisons with his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, who travelled to the US after refusing to concede defeat to Lula in 2022. Jair Bolsonaro later returned to Brazil and was sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup.Flavio has yet to formally concede defeat, saying he would seek to annul the election result over alleged voter irregularities.
