Why it matters
These violent incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding gang-related crime and public safety in the Western Cape region.
Five people were killed, and one person was injured in a shooting in NY 50, Gugulethu, Cape Town, in the early hours of Monday.
“Police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence where they found the victims with multiple gunshot wounds. Four men and one woman, aged between 19 and 23, were declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel. A 20-year-old woman who sustained gunshot wounds was transported to a medical facility for treatment,” Colonel Andrè Traut said.
He added that the preliminary investigation indicated that two armed men forced their way into a house in the area by kicking in the front door.
“The suspects allegedly demanded a firearm before opening fire on the occupants. They fled the scene and have not yet been arrested,” Traut said.
