These incidents highlight ongoing security challenges for inter-city travel in Ghana and the risks faced by public transport passengers.
Two VIP Jeoun transport coaches were attacked by armed robbers on Ghana’s highways overnight Wednesday into Thursday, leaving five people injured, the company said.
In a press release VIP JEoun said the first attack occurred at about 23:00 GMT on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, between Apedwa Junction via Nkronso, Akooko and Akyem Asafo.
According to the statement, robbers used a vehicle to block the road and opened fire on a coach travelling from Accra to Sunyani. The driver, the driver’s mate and three passengers sustained gunshot injuries.
“The driver has since been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital,” VIP JEoun said.
Police officers from Suhum in the Eastern Region responded to the scene, repelled the attackers and reopened the highway, the company added. Three coaches were caught in the blockade.
A second incident was reported about two hours later.
