In the middle of the third quarter in the World Lacrosse Women's Championship, play briefly stopped. Next door at the Meiji Jingu Baseball Stadium, home of the professional Tokyo Yakult Swallows, there was a planned fireworks display during their matchup against the Hanshin Tigers.
As the blasts lit up the sky at the gold medal game, held inside Prince Chichibu Stadium, fans changed "USA!" and cheered. It felt like an early coronation of the world champions.
It was never in doubt for USA as they competed one of the most dominant World Lacrosse Championship runs of all time, beating Canada 16-4 for their fifth-straight gold.
It was a shocking display of depth for the Americans, as 11 players scored. Sam Apuzzo (3G, 2A) led the way, and Eliza Osburn (2G), Kenzie Kent (2G, 1A) and Ally Kennedy (2G, 1A) had multiple goals.
