A fire that broke out next to West Auckland’s LynnMall and sparked an evacuation of the shopping centre is being treated as suspicious.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called to the New Lynn shopping centre at about 4pm yesterday after a pile of pallets caught fire behind the Woolworths supermarket, sending plumes of black smoke across the sky.
The fire was quickly extinguished and there were no reports of injuries, with a second truck heading to the scene stood down before arriving.
While police did not attend the scene, Acting Detective Inspector Megan Goldie of the Waitematā Criminal Investigation Branch told the Herald the fire has since been deemed suspicious in consultation with a fire investigator.
