A fire broke out at a labour camp in Mulund, Mumbai, caused by a series of gas cylinder explosions. Emergency services successfully evacuated all workers, and no casualties were reported.
Why it matters
The incident highlights safety concerns and living conditions for migrant construction workers in major urban infrastructure projects.
A major fire broke out at a ground-plus-one-storey labour camp at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Project Affected Persons (PAP) project in Mulund East on Thursday (October 8, 2026), triggering seven gas cylinder explosions and forcing workers residing at the premises to evacuate.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone East 3) Abhaysinha Deshmukh, the fire is suspected to have started as a small blaze within the premises before a gas cylinder exploded, causing the situation to escalate.
“During the incident, seven gas cylinders exploded. All occupants of the premises were safely evacuated,” Mr. Deshmukh said, adding that no casualties or fatalities had been reported so far.
The labour camp, located in the Tata Colony area of Mulund East, was established to accommodate construction workers employed at the BMC PAP project. The project is reportedly being developed by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
