A fire broke out at an abandoned cinema off West Masi Street and near the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple on Friday night.
According to Fire and Rescue Services officials, the blaze began as a minor fire in the parking lot before spreading inside the building where stored toys were gutted. The flames shot through dilapidated the ceiling. As all the vehicles parked inside the building were removed, there were no damages to vehicles, according to initial reports.
More than eight fire engines were deployed to battle the blaze, with operations expected to continue late into the night, added the official.
