Fifty years ago | Shukla’s tribute to Bharathi

Madras, September 28: The State Government has decided to acquire the house at Triplicane in Madras where the Tamil poet Subrahmanya Bharathi lived during his last days and also to rename Pycrofts Road as Bharathi Salai.

This was announced to-day by the Governor, Mr. Mohanlal Sukhadia, while inaugurating a month-long Son et Lumiere programme on Bharathi at a function presided over by the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr. V.C. Shukla.

The sound and light spectacle entitled “Oru Sakthi Pirakuthu Moochinile” in the courtyard of Rajaji Hall portrays different facets of the poet as a nationalist, journalist, social reformed and devotee. Mr. Shukla said that though the programme was to run for a month, if the response was encouraging, it would not only be prolonged but extended to other parts.
