Fifty years ago | Incentive to boost handloom exports

This archival piece from 1975 discusses government efforts to boost handloom exports through modernization and cash incentives. It highlights the role of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms in coordinating industry standards and improving weaver livelihoods.
Why it matters
It provides historical context on India's textile export policies and the long-standing government focus on the handloom sector's economic development.
Madras, June 21: Export of handloom goods formed about 50 per cent of the country’s total exports during 1975-76 and it was expected to be exceeded this year, in spite of the difficulties the industry faced, Mr. Mani Narayanaswami, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, said here to-day. A coded system of classification and fixing standards for the export varieties by voluntary organisations would be useful, he added.
