Fianna Fáil TD to table bill to ban sale of vapes and cigarettes to anyone born after 2009

FIANNA FÁIL TD Malcolm Byrne will today table a bill that would ban the sale of tobacco or nicotine products to anyone born on or after 2009, thereby creating a “smokefree generation”.

Byrne will this afternoon introduce a Private Member’s Bill in the Dáil which would ban the sale and supply of tobacco products, nicotine products and nicotine inhalation products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009.

In 2025, the Maldives became the first , and so far only, country to enact a permanent generational ban, while in April, the UK Parliament approved legislation for similar measures.

Byrne said his bill establishes a rolling age restriction, ensuring that the specified cohort will never be legally permitted to purchase such products, including vapes and nicotine pouches, over their lifetime.
