Fianna Fáil Minister of State Robert Troy ordered to pay €500 in damages after tenant left without working oven

Irish Minister of State Robert Troy has been ordered to pay €500 in damages to a tenant following a Residential Tenancies Board tribunal. The dispute centered on a non-functioning oven in a rental property, alongside other maintenance complaints.
Why it matters
The case highlights the intersection of political accountability and landlord-tenant regulations, particularly regarding a public official's private business dealings.
Minister of State Robert Troy has been ordered to pay €500 in damages to a tenant of his after a Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) tribunal heard she was without a functioning oven for at least three months.
The Fianna Fáil TD for Longford-Westmeath, who previously resigned as a minister of State in 2022 after he failed to fully declare the extent of his property holdings in the Dáil register of interests, did not attend the tribunal hearing in July.
His tenant, Priscilla Ryan, who had been renting an apartment from Troy on Mary Street in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, since 2021, claimed she had been without a functioning oven for two years.
She also alleged a range of other issues with the apartment, including that there was no fire extinguisher or fire exit, and that the kitchen floor covering was “stuck down with duct tape”.
