Fears of an Ebola case: isolation of patient lifted at CHUM

A Montreal hospital has lifted the isolation protocols for a patient who was being evaluated for a potential Ebola infection. Health officials confirmed that the patient did not require further Ebola-specific measures, and the risk of the virus in Canada remains low.
Why it matters
This incident highlights the vigilance of public health systems in monitoring potential international health threats and the importance of clear communication to prevent public panic.
The isolation of a patient who was potentially suspected of having the Ebola virus was lifted Thursday evening at the l’Université de Montréal (CHUM)
Ellen Caracas, senior media relations advisor for the Montreal hospital centre, provided this update via email in the evening.
“Therefore, the Ebola protocols will not be activated,” she clarified.
The CHUM had confirmed earlier in the evening that a person potentially infected with the virus was being evaluated in its facility.
Caracas explained at the time that the usual protocols for this type of case had been put in place.
“Ambulances are being temporarily diverted to allow us to safely transfer the patient from the ambulance to the dedicated isolation room in an emergency,” she said.
