Farmers urge State government to modify alignment of diverting surplus water from Cauvery to Ponnaniyar dam

A section of people, particularly farmers in rainshadow Manapparai regioin in Tiruchi district, has urged the State government to modify the alignment for pumping surplus water from Cauvery River to Ponnaniyar and Kannuthur dams.

According to sources, the Water Resources Department has submitted a proposal to the State government seeking ₹83 lakh to take up a feasibility study and prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for pumping surplus water in the Cauvery to Ponnaniyar and Kannuthu dams to stabilise irrigation in the ayacut areas fed by them. While evaluating the proposal, a senior official of the WRD advised the officials to prepare a DPR to implement the project under the solarised pumping water method. The WRD has subsequently sent a proposal, seeking ₹94 lakh to carry out the feasibility study and prepare a DPR.
