Farmers urge implementation of Pandiyar–Moyar river-linking project

Farmers in the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu are urging the state government to expedite the long-discussed Pandiyar–Moyar river-linking project. They also called for stricter environmental protections against industrial pollution and a ban on single-use plastics.
Why it matters
The project is critical for the drinking water and irrigation security of four major districts in Tamil Nadu.
Farmers and representatives of various agricultural organisations have urged the State government to implement the Pandiyar–Moyar river-linking project, which has been under discussion for the past 60 years, and initiate talks with the Kerala government to expedite its implementation.
At a farmers’ awareness meeting organised by the Pandiyar–Moyar Orunginaippu Iyakkam at Avalpoondurai near Erode on Sunday (October 11, 2026), the participants highlighted the importance of the project in meeting the drinking water needs of the Kongu region, comprising Erode, Tiruppur, Karur and Coimbatore districts, and safeguarding the irrigation requirements of the Lower Bhavani, Kodiveri and Kalingarayan irrigation systems.
Senior farmers’ union leader Venkatachalam presided over the meeting. Movement coordinator Karthikeyan and co-organiser B.C. Sengottaiyan were among those present.
