Farmers seek construction of check-dam across Chittar River at Inaam Vellakkaal

A petition seeking construction of a check-dam across Chittar River at Inaam Vellakkaal under Keezhapaavoor panchayat union, was submitted to Collector Ranjeet Singh on Monday.
A group of farmers from Inaam Vellakkaal, Keezha Vellakkaal and Idaiyarthavanai, all under Keezhapaavoor panchayat union, said in the petition that cultivation of crops on over 500 acres of land in these areas was being done with water from Chittar, the only source of irrigation. Hence, farming would be badly hit if Chittar became dry due to monsoon failure.
“If a check-dam is built near Inaam Vellakkaal, it will save farming on over 500 acres, the only livelihood of this area. It will also improve groundwater table, which will save the standing crop even if the monsoon fails. Hence, the District Collector should take steps for constructing a check-dam at Inaam Vellakkaal,” said the farmers.
