Farmers led by BRS leaders stage protest at canal regulator in Choppadandi, seek SRSP water release

Farmers led by BRS party members protested at a canal regulator in Karimnagar, demanding the release of irrigation water for their crops. Following the demonstration, irrigation officials reportedly agreed to release water to the affected areas.
Why it matters
Water rights and irrigation management remain highly contentious issues that frequently trigger political mobilization in agrarian regions.
Farmers, led by BRS leaders, staged a protest at the SRSP D-86 canal regulator at Choppadandi in Karimnagar district on Wednesday, demanding the release of irrigation water to save standing crops in the Choppadandi and Karimnagar Assembly constituencies.
The BRS leaders alleged that crops were facing the threat of withering for want of water and demanded equitable distribution of SRSP water, including to tail-end areas.
Amid slogans demanding the immediately release of 300 cusecs of water into the D-83 and D-86 canals, the BRS leaders reportedly attempted to lift the canal regulatory gates.
Karimnagar MLA G. Kamalakar, Choppadandi former MLA S. Ravishankar and others participated in the protest.
