An awareness seminar to sensitise farmers, fishermen and the general public to the impact of ‘Super’ El Nino and climate change was organised by the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management at a private engineering college near Nagercoil on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap said the meeting was aimed at creating awareness and promoting precautionary measures among farmers and fishermen against natural challenges, including El Nino and other climatic events, and their impact in the form of rainfall variability, rising temperatures, sea level rise and sea erosion.
Explaining the impact of El Nino and climate change on agriculture, crop protection and water management, he outlined the precautionary measures to be taken by farmers. He also stressed the safety measures to be followed by fishermen during storms, sea erosion, changes in sea level and adverse weather conditions.
