Farmers’ association alleges release of untreated sewage into Bamani river

The Coordination Committee of All Farmers’ Associations of Tamil Nadu has alleged that untreated sewage being released into Bamani river by the Mannargudi Municipality resulting in the sewage stagnating at Serankulam barrage.

Addressing the media at Mannargudi on September 28, Coordination Committee president P.R. Pandian said although ₹240 crore had been allocated for work relating to the underground sewage network system under the Mannargudi municipal domain, the civic body releases untreated sewage into the Bamani.

The sewage stagnated at Serankulam barrage resulting in the area getting engulfed in foul smell. The civic body’s action had affected the cattle which rely on Serankulam barrage for their drinking water needs.

Further, spillover of this untreated sewage into neighbouring Thoppathanaveli barrage, one among the several barrages built across the Bamani before the river joins the Bay of Bengal at Thoppanaveli near Muthupettai.
