After the Coimbatore district administration issued an order directing six quarries in the surroundings of 10 Muthur in Kinathukadavu Taluk to suspend operations, on Wednesday, Muruganantham, a protesting farmer, withdrew his nine-day fast demanding stringent action.
The temporary ban directive was issued based on an audit report of a Revenue Department team on the reported violation of norms by the six quarries that had been operating on government land.
Mr. Muruganantham’s protest highlighted the large-scale movement of minerals into Kerala from the six quarries, and impact of the unauthorised mining on agricultural land and natural environment.
