Sir John Mace, who has died aged 94, rose to lead New Zealand's military after a career that included laying the foundation for the NZSAS "legend".

Sir John Mace, one of the NZSAS “Originals” who served in Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam before rising to lead the Defence Force, has died aged 94 after a lifetime of service to New Zealand and the soldiers he commanded. David Fisher reports.

Lieutenant General Sir John Airth Mace has died aged 94, bringing to an end a life of service to New Zealand and to those who served under him that lasted long beyond his 41-year military career.
