Explainer: What you need to know about road rules changing on October 1

New Zealand is implementing updated road rules on October 1, including new regulations for cyclists and e-scooter users. Key changes allow parents to ride on footpaths with their children and mandate a 1.5-meter passing distance for drivers near vulnerable road users.

These changes aim to improve road safety for families and non-motorized commuters by clarifying infrastructure usage and passing requirements.

Road rules are changing tomorrow. Here’s what you need to know.
Four new rules that come into effect on October 1 include changes to overtaking, where e-scooters can travel and where children can ride their bikes.
“These changes are about fixing the basics: safer streets, clearer rules, and less bureaucracy getting in the way of everyday travel,” Transport Minister Chris Bishop said in announcing the changes earlier this year.
The Government sought public feedback on possible transport changes this year, Bishop said, and received about 6000 responses.
One big change is for families who go cycling with young children.
Originally, it was proposed only children 12 and under could use footpaths, but that has been extended to allow their parents or caregivers to accompany them.
