Ex-KenGen employee ordered to repay Sh16 million or face jail over forged certificates

A former Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) employee has been ordered to pay nearly Sh16 million or face imprisonment after he was found guilty of using forged documents to secure employment and obtain financial benefits. David Mogire Nyabuti was convicted by the Anti-Corruption Court after the prosecution established that he presented a fake KCSE certificate to KenGen and later obtained a disability certificate fraudulently. Senior Principal Magistrate Celesa Okore ordered Nyabuti to pay Sh14,946,118 as compensation for public funds he obtained through fraud. Should he fail to pay, he will serve five years in prison. The court also imposed a Sh900,000 fine for the same offence, with an additional two-year jail term in default. Nyabuti was further fined Sh200,000 on each of two counts of uttering false documents under Section 353 of the Penal Code. Each fine carries a two-year prison term if unpaid. The sentences will run concurrently.
