This case highlights the legal consequences for public servants who engage in criminal behavior and attempt to obstruct justice.
An Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer was under the influence of alcohol when he drove and crashed his car into a concrete barrier on the side of a slip road into Loyang Avenue.
But Ken Ong Wei Qi later lied to the police about only consuming alcoholic drinks after driving.
The 35-year-old, who held the rank of Assistant Superintendent at the time of the incident on June 14, 2025, admitted in court on Oct 19 to offences including drink driving and providing false information to a public servant.
On Thursday (Oct 22), he was sentenced to three weeks' jail, fined $6,500 and disqualified from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licences for 36 months.
An ICA spokesperson said in response to AsiaOne's queries that Ong was immediately reassigned to administrative duties after the accident.
He subsequently resigned from ICA on Oct 19, the day of his conviction.
