EU award-winning activist Praise Aloikin remanded over SIM card law violation

Prominent human rights defender and lawyer Praise Aloikin Opoloje was on Monday, September 28, 2026, remanded to prison by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court following her arrest over the weekend. Appearing before Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, the 27-year-old activist pleaded not guilty to charges relating to the illegal use of another person’s SIM card. She was remanded until October 14, 2026.

According to the charge sheet (CRB 1095/2026 / CHARGE BUG. CO. 1440/2026) originating from Kampala Central Police Station (CPS), Opoloje faces one count of using another person's SIM card, contrary to Regulation 29 of the Regulation of Interception of Communications Regulations, 2024.
