Ethiopia’s Economy Jumps 59% to $201bn After GDP Rebasing
✦AI Summary

Ethiopia has revised its GDP upward by 59% to $201 billion for the 2024/25 fiscal year after updating its national accounts benchmark. While this improves debt-to-GDP ratios, it does not change the actual debt burden or provide immediate cash for the government.

Why it matters

The rebasing of the economy is a critical step for Ethiopia as it navigates debt restructuring and seeks to improve investor confidence following a 2023 default.

Ethiopia has revised the measured size of its economy upward by 59.2% to $201.42 billion for the 2024/25 fiscal year, after replacing its decade-old national accounts benchmark with a new base year. The more consequential question is whether more accurate measurement of digital services, agriculture and emerging industries can translate into stronger revenue collection, better investment decisions and renewed lender confidence.
