ESMO Launches €1 Million Clinical Trials Funding Initiative to Support Academic Cancer Research

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) has launched a new Clinical Trials Funding Initiative , committing €1 million to support independent academic clinical research aimed at optimising cancer care, reducing treatment burden and improving patient outcomes worldwide.

Announced on September 10, 2026, the programme will support pragmatic interventional studies with international relevance, particularly research addressing questions that may have major implications for patients and healthcare systems but are often not priorities for commercially sponsored trials.

Rather than focusing primarily on developing new anticancer medicines, the initiative is designed to investigate how existing treatments and care pathways can be used more effectively and efficiently.

Research areas may include treatment duration, treatment sequencing, treatment de-escalation, streamlined treatment delivery and alternative models of care. The overall objective is to reduce unnecessary treatment and its associated toxicity and burden while maintaining clinical effectiveness and improving access to optimal cancer care.
