EPRA begins search for new Director General to replace Bargoria who resigned over fuel scandal

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) in Kenya is seeking a new Director General following the resignation of Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria. Bargoria stepped down amid investigations into a fuel scandal involving substandard imports and data manipulation.
Why it matters
The leadership transition is critical for restoring public trust and ensuring regulatory integrity in Kenya's vital energy and petroleum sectors.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has officially opened applications for the position of Director General, seeking to replace former Director General Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria, who resigned from the role. The Authority, currently headed by Acting Director General Joseph Oketch, has set September 9, 2026, as the deadline for applications for the three-year contractual position, which is renewable once, subject to satisfactory performance and the mandatory retirement age. Bargoria resigned as EPRA Director General on April 4, 2026, following his arrest on allegations of importing substandard fuel and manipulating data in the petroleum supply chain. The resignation came as inquiries continued into an alleged scheme involving irregular, overpriced and substandard fuel imports, as well as data manipulation in the petroleum supply chain. Following his resignation, the EPRA board appointed Oketch to serve as Acting Director General.
