Environmentalists raise concerns over waste dumped in feeder channel to Krishnampathi Lake in Coimbatore

Garbage dumped along the inlet channel carrying runoff from the Marudhamalai hills to Krishnampathi Lake has led to concerns among environmentalists and residents, who fear that the blockage may impede rainwater inflow into the waterbody and create public health issues.

K. Mohanraj, an environmental activist, said Krishnampathi Lake has two major feeder channels — Koilmedu and Karperayan. Of the two, the Karperayan stream is the larger feeder. It originates in the Marudhamalai forest area and flows towards the lake. However, the stream remains predominantly dry for most of the year and carries little or no natural flow. By the time it passes through localities such as Vadavalli, Linganoor and Seeranaickenpalayam, it largely conveys sewage before draining into the lake.

Mr. Mohanraj alleged that several households and small commercial establishments have been dumping solid waste into the channel, affecting its flow and further degrading water quality.
