English sets new PB, Adeleke misses out on final spot

Mark English set a new personal best at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest as he finished sixth in the men's 800m final.
The Donegal man posted a time of 1:42.78 in a rapid race having broken 1.43 for the first time (1:42.97) at a Diamond League meeting in London in July.
The time also secures him the qualification standard time required for the 2027 World Championships in Beijing, something already achieved by fellow Irish athletes Sarah Healy, Kate O'Connor and the women's 4x400m relay team.
English, who claimed European gold in Birmingham in August, won his semi-final on Saturday but was always facing a real ask to finish among the top three in a packed field; understandable given the inaugural biennial invitational had a prize pot of $10m (€8.67m).
