England hires New Zealand’s Fleming as Test head coach

England has appointed former New Zealand cricketer Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of the men's Test team, with Joe Root returning as captain. The move follows a period of poor performance and aims to revitalize the squad under an all-New Zealand coaching setup.
Why it matters
This represents a major leadership overhaul for English cricket as they attempt to improve their standing in international Test matches.
Add TT as Preferred Source English cricket on Thursday turned to another New Zealander to coach the men’s Test team, hiring former Kiwi star Stephen Fleming with Joe Root reappointed as captain.
Fleming replaced his former teammate Brendon McCullum, who was fired after losing the Ashes series in Australia 4-1 over the winter and, last month, losing at home to New Zealand 2-1.
England now has an all-New Zealand coaching set-up with McCullum remaining in charge of the ODI and T20 teams.
Fleming is not to take charge until after Pakistan’s three-Test tour, which begins on Aug. 19 in Leeds.
McCullum’s former assistant Marcus Trescothick is to be the interim England coach for that series.
