KIDAPAWAN CITY – Another critically endangered Philippine Eagle died from suspected electrocution in remote Barangay Libertad, Arakan, Cotabato on Sunday, Oct. 4. A resident found the eagle on the ground near an electric post. It was the second Philippine Eagle that died due to electrocution in eight days.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Northern Mindanao reported over the weekend a mature Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) was also found dead near an electrical post in Sitio Panghaon, Barangay Guinalaban, Salay, Misamis Oriental on Oct. 1.
Arakan Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) head Jimmy Montero said that the eagle may have perched on the power line and eventually electrocuted.
