An Indian Express report detailing disagreements within the Election Commission regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls snowballed into calls for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation and elicited sharp rebuke from Opposition parties about the Election Commission’s handling of the SIR, on Friday last week (September 25, 2026).
Some of the report’s key points include undue centralisation of roll data and improper modification of Form 6 without following legal process. In response, the ECI said that digital electoral roll data is kept under strict security with regards to data control by ground-level Electoral Registration Officers. Regarding dissent notes from the two Election Commissioners and them allegedly being kept in the dark about the ECI’s decisions, it said that all such decisions are taken unanimously by the Commission.
