An investigation is underway into an election hoarding deliberately set on fire in Auckland’s Mt Albert overnight.
Police have warned “illegal and destructive behaviour” will be taken seriously after 30 hoardings were damaged in a two-hour spree in Tauranga last week.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Burrow told the Herald that emergency services responded to reports of a political billboard on fire on Selcourt Rd, Mt Albert, around 12.48am.
“The fire was extinguished by Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
“We are treating the circumstances as suspicious, and investigations will be ongoing.”
Photos taken by a Herald photographer show the burned remnants of the National Party election hoarding. Those of rival parties were untouched.
