Natham police on Saturday arrested eight persons in connection with the clash between two groups during a Vinayaka idol procession in Komanampatti near Natham in Dindigul district.

According to police, one group was taking Vinayaka idols in a procession through a common area. The other group reportedly objected to this and insisted that the idols be taken through an alternative route.

A verbal altercation ensued, which escalated into a clash. Five persons sustained injuries and were admitted to the government hospital in Natham.

On receiving the information, the police officials arrived at the spot and held talks with both the groups. The police advised them to first immerse the idols in the pond. Subsequently, the Vinayaka idols were immersed in the designated waterbody.
