Economic integration offers new opportunities for Southeast Asia's Muslims
Economic integration within ASEAN is providing new opportunities for Muslim communities in Southeast Asia through expanded trade and halal industry growth. Experts note that while the bloc focuses on economic and political cooperation, these initiatives indirectly benefit diverse religious groups across the region.
Why it matters
Understanding the intersection of regional economic policy and religious demographics is crucial for analyzing development trends in Southeast Asia.
By Mushfiq Ahmed KARACHI, Pakistan (MNTV) — For Southeast Asia’s 240 million Muslims, the economic integration of ASEAN — the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the region’s main political and economic bloc — is producing concrete gains in halal industries, small business, and cross-border trade. As the bloc deepens its single market and strengthens trade links, analysts say Muslim communities are well placed to benefit from expanding regional markets and investment.
Melinda Martinus, a research fellow at the ASEAN Studies Centre of the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, a Singapore-based research body, said the bloc has grown through a sustained commitment to dialogue and cooperation despite the region’s diversity.
“Since its establishment in 1967, ASEAN has evolved from an association of five countries into a comprehensive regional community of eleven member states,” Martinus told MNTV.
